Compare the SSP 83mm burrs

Each burr makes a different cup. Find the one that suits how you brew.

  • Multi-Purpose (MP)

    Selected

The most clarity at 83mm, for light, washed coffees

    Light body, very high clarity

    Filter Great

    • The highest clarity in the 83mm range
    • Can taste one-dimensional

    Espresso Limited

    • Hard to dial in and inconsistent for espresso

    Roast level: Light

  • Brewing

    Selected

Clean, bright filter that's forgiving to brew

    Medium body, high clarity

    Filter Great

    • Tea-like clarity with a bit of body
    • Forgiving, owners say
    • Also sold as Brew Purpose (BP)

    Espresso Limited

    • Light-roast shots are possible, but not a classic short shot

    Roast level: Light to medium

  • Cast Lab Sweet (LS)

    Our all-rounder Selected

Sweet, complex espresso with good body, plus a big, bold filter cup

    Full body, medium clarity

    Filter Good

    • Big and bold with plenty of acidity
    • Suits natural and processed coffees

    Espresso Great

    • Owners rate it the strongest 83mm for espresso
    • More clarity than the HU while keeping the body
    • Needs 20 to 30kg to settle in and likes a deep basket

    Roast level: Medium-light to dark

  • High Uniformity (HU)

    Selected

A more traditional, blended shot that's easy to dial in

    Full body, fairly low clarity

    Filter Not recommended

    • Built for espresso rather than filter

    Espresso Great

    • A modern take on the classic espresso burr
    • A wide dial range makes good shots easy to find
    • Cleaner than the smaller 64mm HU

    Roast level: Medium-light to medium-dark

  • Are you looking to buy SSP 83mm Burrs to fit Mazzer Major, ZM, Turin DF83 in Australia?

SSP's 83mm flat burrs for the Mazzer Major bolt pattern, which the Turin DF83, Mazzer ZM, Ceado E37S and Niche Duo share. Choose the burr and coating above. Each set is a straight swap for the factory burrs.

    Which burr

    • Cast Lab Sweet (LS): SSP's cast geometry, re-cut from the old Ditting 804 cast design, and the best 83mm for espresso. Sweet with good body and a wide sweet spot once seasoned, it handles espresso and filter and suits medium-light to dark roasts, naturals and processed coffees. It likes a deep basket.
    • High Uniformity (HU): SSP's espresso cut, sold as "Espresso" by some shops. A modern take on the classic espresso burr: a little cleaner and lighter than the 64mm HU, with a wider sweet spot. Not the one for filter.
    • Brewing: cut for filter, clean but forgiving, with light espresso possible. Some shops sell it as Brew Purpose (BP).
    • Multi-Purpose (MP): the clarity burr, for light, washed, high grown coffees on filter. For espresso it is hard to dial in and results vary.

Choose the cut first. SSP suggests Red Speed (TiAlCN) for espresso and Silver Knight for filter. Owners who have compared both mostly say the cut makes the bigger difference. Both are rated for roughly 4,000 to 5,000kg of coffee.

    Compatibility

    • Mazzer Major, Major V and Major Electronic
    • Mazzer ZM and ZM Plus
    • Turin DF83 and DF83V
    • Niche Duo
    • Ceado E37S, E37SD and E37SL (the screws can be a snug fit, so start each one part way before tightening)

Not for conical grinders such as the Weber Key or Mazzer Robur, or 80mm grinders like the Ditting 804. Have a Fiorenzato F83 or Compak E8? The factory burrs look the same size on paper but we have not seen a confirmed swap, so ask us first.

    Features

    • 83mm flat burrs on the Mazzer Major bolt pattern, made by SSP in South Korea
    • Four burrs, each in Red Speed or Silver Knight
    • Faster, cooler grinding than the factory burrs
    • Bigger burrs take longer to settle in: owners report 10 to 30kg of coffee before the cup is at its best

    What's in the box

    • 1 x Set of SSP 83mm burrs (upper and lower) in the burr and coating you choose
